Prenatal Care and Delivery Q & A

What Services are Provided with Prenatal Care?

Prenatal care is designed to keep both you and your baby safe during pregnancy. Through regular checkups, screenings, education, and counseling, your OB/GYN at the Avery Center monitors your progression through pregnancy and prepares you for labor and childbirth.

At your first pregnancy appointment, your doctor gives you a physical exam and orders blood tests. An internal ultrasound confirms your pregnancy and your due date. In most cases, you also receive a breast and pelvic exam, including Pap smear.

Your physician discusses lifestyle habits that can impact your pregnancy. They explain what you can expect during your pregnancy and when you should call the doctor.

How Often Do You Need to See an OB/GYN During Pregnancy?

If you think you’re pregnant, call your OB/GYN right away. Although your first appointment may not be scheduled until around eight weeks, this informs your doctor of your potential pregnancy.

After your initial appointment, your doctor wants to see you regularly throughout your pregnancy. Appointments should be scheduled:

  • Once a month through week 28
  • Twice a month through week 36
  • Weekly through birth

If you have a high-risk pregnancy or suffer from certain chronic conditions, you may need to be seen more often, allowing your OB/GYN to monitor both you and the baby.
